"the self-neutered american male"

god damn.

as i was reading a review of extract, this passage hit me like a fucking brick:

"Joel Reynolds (Jason Bateman) is . . . []written as self-made and flourishing, the owner of a modest food-extract manufacturing company he created out of a childhood aspiration to make his mom's cookies taste better. He is, by any measure, a success—owner of a fancy car and expansive house, husband of a pretty wife. Suburban bliss, to be sipped poolside. Yet Joel . . . is consumed by dissatisfaction; the accoutrements of achievement provide little reward. (Bateman, still suffering from a case of Arrested Development, has come to perfectly embody the self-neutered American male.)."

self-neutered? has it come to that? perhaps its a difficult truth i don't want to face. t hat's kind of a new phenomenon for me. i've always been so relentlessly critical of anyone i suspected of being dishonest with themselves. i guess the tables are starting to turn a little bit. sucks. i don't need mike judge beating me over the head with it.

so what's the choice? do whatever you want? that's certainly seductive, but then there's someone accusing you of going through a "crisis" and don draper calling you "foolish." i guess there has to be a balance, of course, but no one really ever prepares you for these kinds of things. you just have to figure them out as you go.

oh, and there was also this:

". . . martyrdom really is the highest form of narcissism."

jesus christ (heh). just when you're tempted to play the victim. sounds like this one hits hard. can't fucking wait.
