through all those complex years / i thought i was alone

i know this is the gayest cover ever (wonder how phil feels about those vocals) but skip ahead to the 5:00 minute mark and check out who drops by to do a little guest shredding. (those of you in attendance at ozzfest '99 might wanna check in a bit earlier to catch burton c. bell of fear factory). i usually stick by the things i've done in my past, but i honestly can't believe i used to listen to dream theater. i could be a contrarian and try to defend them as being "badass," but i don't even want to. they're so stupid. look at the motherfucking drum kit! and what the fuck is everyone wearing? leather pants with leather laces up the legs? jesus christ.

hearing the real version on the radio this weekend reminded me of bringing official live: 101 proof to tennis practice in 1996 or whenever, much to the chagrin of my teammates. butt cut, plaid shorts, courier shoes, head genesis racquet, "lucky golf tee" behind my ear, and an insistence that we listen to pantera, type o, prong, helmet, and (obviously) metallica when it was my turn to pick the music. (the golf tee was a manufactured eccentricity intended to garner any kind of attention from the girls on the team. i'm sure you can guess how well that worked). but as much shit as i got from the tennis set for my adolescent and socially awkward taste in music, i remember cemetery gates being surprisingly well-received. i guess it's pantera's crossover hit. fittingly, i had that shit all the way turnt up driving back from playing tennis this weekend.

ps. did anyone know phil "died" at starplex in '96? check his wiki. that was smack in the middle of (a) my pantera fan-dom and (b) my days of listening to 97.1 from dusk till dawn. you'd think i would have heard about it but i had no idea. is it on the behind the music?
