"my knife is sharp and chrome" or if the smiths were a nu metal band

deftones have been in my consciousness a lot lately. i haven't thought about them in years, but i talked about them with two different friends on separate occasions last night. it's weird, but 10 years later i guess i'm starting to wax nostalgic about the things that were meaningful to me as a teenager. around the fur was the absolute soundtrack to driving around plano on summer nights. bored, awkward, anxious, in a hurry to get somewhere but not quite sure where. i don't care where just far.

the album art still moves me (rick kosick photos btw). the sweat, the underwear, the vacant look in her eyes. at 17, i was uncomfortable and unfamiliar with the dark lust it stirred in me. you can do whatever you want with her, but then you gotta live with yourself. at the time, it was intimidating. i couldn't have done it. but now, in my post-dorian gray, post-blood meridian state, it speaks to the blood lust in me. i wanna ruin things. i wanna take scalps. i want to pull you down here with me. gimme your wrist.

it still makes me uncomfortable, and for that reason i think it's hugely effective. i can't remember the last time i had such a visceral, lasting reaction to album art.

they're onto something. i'm not sure they've perfected the end product, but there's a rich vein of emotion and feeling in their music that still works for me. i'm not ashamed to admit that it still moves me. maybe it's the angst, maybe it's the unfulfilled, maybe i haven't grown as much in the last 10 years as i'd like to think.

new album out next week. they're playing edgefest and they're touring with a.i.c. and mastodon.

  1. i still like type o better even though i´ve heard digital bath three times in a row. there´s actually no point of comparison based on sentiment alone. sound-wise there´s an evident change in époque, i can almost paint a semi-accurate picture, from blood thirsty angsty teenager to blood thirsty antisocial grad student.
